About This Site

Let's begin with what this website is not.  It is neither a left wing or a right wing screed.  It is just me telling you what I think.  It won't take you long to pin me down as conservative, which today means far-right  homophobic xenophobic transphobic climate-denying bible-totin' white nationalist extremist who has a life-sized poster of Uncle Adolph in his parlour.  

Which is not true, at least the last part about Hitler.   Although I do have a small plaster statuette of Trump in a Buddha pose sitting on a shelf in our living room.  My son bought it for me and I think it's pretty funny.  Not everyone does.  We had a lady in our house last summer who saw it and said she would try not to puke, which I thought was a bit rude of her.  I have noticed that a lot of progressive liberal types have no sense of humor.  She did apologize for her remark, the way you would if you had spit on someone's floor on purpose.

I read somewhere that someone who was a liberal thirty years ago would be seen as a conservative today.  And someone who was a conservative thirty years ago would be considered a white nationalist nazi today.  I believe that.

I do not intend to talk down to my millions of readers.  The language for the most part will be simple, even if sometimes finding the truth isn't.  I will be following two of George Orwell's rules for writing:  never use a long word if a shorter one will do; and if it is possible to cut a word out, cut it out. 

I will always assume that I am speaking to intelligent human beings who have an attention span that enables them to persevere in thought, and who are not trapped inside their own ideological bubble.  If you are not one of these people, you will probably not enjoy this site.

If there is one overarching theme to this site it is this:  

Canada as a fair, safe, and open democratic society is dying, and it is too late to do anything about it.

You are welcome to hate this idea  You are welcome to hate me too.  Shooting the messenger has long been a popular sport among those who don't like hearing the truth. 

If you love the truth--if that is what motivates you above all--we will get along just fine.  You will help me find it and I will help you find it, and we will, eventually, both end up at the same place.  And that is good.

The title of my site is borrowed from Dostoevski.  He wrote Notes from Underground  back in the 1860's.  His motive for doing so is similar to mine.  He saw a great abyss opening up in human civilization and tried to warn the world about it.  He and Frederich Nietzsche both predicted the horrors of the 20th century with uncanny accuracy.  

Here is something that should give us pause:  they both predicted that this 21st century could be even worse. 😬

I, in my own small way, am issuing a similar warning, beginning with the country into which I was born.  Canada faces a dystopian future that will leave millions of Canadians in poverty and despair.  We will not be alone.  Europe, the UK, and Australia are in the same canoe as us, heading over the falls.  This site exists in part to defend and illuminate that sad prognosis.

Comment.  Argue.  Be passionate.  I promise to be ready to give in to the truth.  I just ask that you do the same.
